** EDIT as of 1/27/10 - Please check my blog for more current posts (such as here, here and here) regarding this project. You can also use the google search in my side bar and type in, "Blankets for Haiti" for a more complete list. Thanks.**
By now I am sure you have heard of the recent earthquake in Haiti. I'm sending lots of prayers up for them.
When disaster strikes it often leaves me feeling hopeless. How can I help?
The blog world is full of brilliant and talented crafters and sewists. My blog has a humble 20 or so followers - some crafters, some not. But why not give helping out a shot... Lots of big things start with just one willing person.
Some friends of mine are going to Haiti in March (it was actually planned before the earthquake). Would you be interested in making a blanket to send with them? Quilt, Crochet, Knit, Tie up some fleece... Any size and style is welcome. They will be serving lots of kids.
I will post more details later.
Here is my friends email response when I asked her about making the blankets:
Sarah,
Oh my gosh... that would be AMAZING!
There will be lots of kids and it would be so awesome to give them something so personal. Even if there isn't something for everyone, we could give them to the pastor to distribute as they see fit.
I am going with a group from the Vineyard, but it isn't a 'Vineyard mission's trip'... My youth pastor from high school has had it on his heart for awhile to serve Haiti. In high school I traveled to the Dominican Republic (DR) to do mission's service and it was the first time my heart was completely broken for the poor and the lovely people of the country. We went with a mission's group called Time Ministries. Since then, we have stayed in contact with the church that we served with and God has really blessed the DR. Their economy is growing and ppl are slowing becoming more economically stable. Praise the Lord! Anyway, R (my youth pastor) has gone back several times and we have been able to financially support him. Most of the times we have gone or sent him, it includes a trip to Haiti to do some sort of relief work as Haiti is very much more impoverished. Now, since the DR is becoming more stable, the ppl of the church we used to serve, has grown a heart to serve their neighbors in Haiti! Very cool, because it is very much against the mentality of the Dominicans to have an outward focus, let alone finances to do outreach.
The group that is going from here includes, myself, A, R, his wife (Tonya) and their two kids, AJ and K and L.
We are going to help a group of young adults from the DR learn how to do missions and evangelism to their neighbors in Haiti! Since Haiti is not a politically stable environment, we fly into the DR, get our materials to build a structure for the orphanage, put as much together as we can and then take a truck to Haiti. That was our plan until all of the recent happenings with the country. We might be doing something completely unplanned now. Whatever is in God's plan.
It is very cool though that we have been planning this trip and out of the blue they are going to need more relief than anyone could have ever foreseen. One of those moments where you realize God is bigger than everything.
If you have it on your heart to help us, I welcome it!!! A and I have been doubting financially how we are going to get there. This is probably a much longer email than you anticipated... but if you and M could keep us and Haiti in your prayers, I would really appreciate it!
Let me know what you would like to get to Haiti and I would love to take it with us.
Talk to you soon,
D
What you want to do is very sweet, but it's the wrong approach. From here: "...experts say, whatever you do, don’t donate anything but money. Under no circumstances should you mail care packages, toys, food or clothes. Don’t even think about sending drugs. The response to prior disasters shows that regardless of your intentions, you will only be making matters worse."
ReplyDeleteWill - Thanks for your opinion. These blankets are not going to be shipped to Haiti in a box but rather hand delivered to individuals by individuals. My hope is that they will bring warmth and comfort in a time of desperate need.
ReplyDeleteWill - I did read the link to the article you sent and agree that things should not be sent w/o a specific destination/request, etc. Again, that is not the case with the blankets. Thanks again for your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah. I'm a Sarah, too.
ReplyDeleteI actually have no idea who you are. I found you because...I knew of a church that collected blankets and handed them out in the aftermath of Katrina; I wondered if anyone would be distributing blankets in Haiti. Behold! God is good. :)
I'm glad you're doing this. I'm going to check with my home church--if we're sending a group (which I suspect we will), then I will try to work with them first. But if not, depending on where in the world you are, I would consider sending a blanket or two along with your group!
Either way...God bless you. God bless these individuals who are going to serve and to minister to the very enormous needs of the people of Haiti!

ReplyDeleteThanks for your encouragement! (I'm in Ohio-fyi)
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI'm in Ohio too, and I just love this idea. I'm sending out a call to my newsletter readers about knitting up some blankets. This is so kind of you!
I bless you for what you are arranging. I've been off work since April 2009 & have done what charity crochet work I can during that time. I don't have money but I do have time and yarn!! I have some baby blankets made up and will make some full-size blankets. I will subscribe to posts on this blog & await info on how to get what I am able to crochet to you.
ReplyDeleteFYI-I have a temporary position starting Mon, 1/18/10. Hopefully, it will turn into full-time permanent! I am hopeful.....

ReplyDeleteBlankets can be mailed to me in Ohio. Please see my second post about Blanket for Haiti for more ideas.
I found your blog through soulemama and was wondering if I could send more than just blankets with your friends?
ReplyDeleteMy girlfriend and I went through hurricane katrina and we remember the kindness of all those strangers who gave so many things, things that didn't meet needs so much as brought smiles, things like handmade jewelry to replace things that were lost. Just brought a smile to our face then and we thought it might be nice to make some things and we just need a channel through which to send them.
If you think this would be possible with your freinds I would love to hear back from you at twigogallery@yahoo.com! Thanks!
P.S. will be making a few quilts, too :)
We're in...my preschool families are getting busy ...we'll be in touch...another Sara in Wooster Ohio
ReplyDeleteI live in Canada, but I would love to knit some blankets and send them to you...could you please email me your address?
ReplyDeletekatiegrace83@yahoo.com
Thank you.
Sarah:
ReplyDeleteWhat compassion; the efforts that are going forth by so many including you and your mission friends. If you would like to donate the blankets that I made for Sam and Ray, my feeling would not be hurt. There are a magnitude of needs for these pepople. I know there are priorities of survival and recovery at this crucial time for water and food but a hand delivered blanket will give a child something to hold onto when all else is crumbling around them. God bless everyone who has prayed and led a helping hand or heart in this crises. I look at these times as a test by God for us to listen and obey what has been layed heavily on our hearts according to his Word. Aunt Patty
Hi! I work at a church in Washington State and my youth have fleece to make blankets with. I wasn't sure how to get them to real people in Haiti, and low and behold, I googled "Blankets for Haiti" and up you popped!! Would you be able to take a few more fleece blankets with you? If this is too much, please let me know. We don't want to overwhelm you and could probably find another way to get them there. Then again, God is doing something here through you...and it's pretty amazing. Thank you. - Anne
ReplyDeleteAnne - Please email me directly at sarahrmara@hotmail.com and we can work out details. Thanks!
ReplyDeletevery nice..............
ReplyDeleteYes, I would like to help also. I can crochet but not fast enough for a blanket. I have several small fleece blankets that has been sent to me for donations that I gave to two Indian schools. THey are so soft. And I would be willing to buy other things to send you. Let me know how to help. Sue in Alabama.

ReplyDeleteI too was looking for some way to get fleece blankets to Haiti. I have a girl scout troop and would like the girls to make the blankets and see that they get there. Do you still want more?
GS Troop Leader - yes, please email me directly.
ReplyDeleteTrying to get blankets to Haiti as well. How do I email you? The kids school is tying blankets this coming Monday, with fabric they have been collecting all week.
ReplyDeleteI found you on Google search because I was looking for a way to lend my talents to the people in Haiti. I don't have much money but lots of yarn and I can crochet granny square blankets pretty fast, I might be able to make up a couple for your friends to take with them. I would love to help in whatever way I can. Are you still looking for blankets? Valerie
ReplyDelete27 blankets on their way to you!!!! I have to say thanks to you, the individuals who are making the trip, my community who donated money and material as well as some completed blankets. Due to an article that my local paper did on my blanket making (I'm sending you a copy) I actually received enough material to make at least 50 blankets, but didn't have enough time....so that material will be used to make blankets for the hospitalized pediatric patients that I care for. What fun it's been and such a blessing that the Lord placed on my heart!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter made blankets for her Girl Scout Bronze award and now I'm trying to find a way to get them there. I came across your blog in my search. Do you know of any way I can get 35 baby blankets to Haiti?
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Tina Smith
Hi Tina -
ReplyDeleteHopefully you will see this (you don't have an email hooked up when leave comments for my to reply another way): As of right now I don't know of any other trips to Haiti. You may want to check with churches in your area.
