Letter Mm Preschool Ideas

This week we have been working with M things. Sam's preschool does a letter each week so, we have been trying to do activities that coincide with their letter. Sam already knows his letters and sounds, but using the letter as a launching point for other activities is fun! We have been trying to bring in more math and logic concepts so, the activities this week may be a little heavy in that area.

Sam is the type of kid who wants to always be doing and learning something. We do most of these activities while Ray is napping but lot of them are activities that younger kids could join in on too. Above all else, we keep it short (about a 1/2 hour a day) and fun!

On Monday:

We made a Mm word list. Sam came up with almost all of these on his own. We hang his artwork on the metal door that leads to our garage so that he can see it and show it off!Went to the library for Mm books. We found some non-fiction books about monkeys, and a reader called, "The Mess" by Patricia Jensen (that he is able to read on his own!) to name a few. We also put Mm books in our box of books from home that we rotate. I hung a map that we had picked up at the zoo above the book which both boys really enjoyed looking at (until Ray ripped it down).
We also made an M&M's clip cards like these. We didn't use the print out version, I just cut some circles out of colored paper and labeled them with numbers and then Sam clipped the corresponding number of clothes pins to the "M&M".

Sam, Ray, and Daddy recorded a letter M song and sent it to Uncle Matthew.

On Tuesday:

We made a lower case M monster.Did some "mud" writing. (Chocolate pudding in a bag.)
Made patterns out of M&M's and then ate them!

Did a science experiment about floating and sinking. Try it!
On Wednesday:

We printed out and read a reader version of Jan Brett's book, The Mitten.

Do-a-Dot Mm.

Counted, colored matched and made patterns out of M&M's.

On Thursday:

We mixed colors together (food coloring and water).
Made a marshmallow M.Made patterns out of Marshmallows. Same had bought be some holiday marshmallows for Christmas that came with green trees and red stars and we had mini marshmallows on hand so we had enough variety for patterns.

Sam made a cool Marshmallow man at school. (large and small marshmallows and toothpicks)

Measured (sink play).
On Friday:
Sam wanted to repeat some of his favorites from this week so we: tried the floating M science experiment again, along with mixing colors, measuring during some sink play and mud writing.

Today:
We did the floating M Science experiment again so that Daddy could see.

Size ordering and patterns with some play money. We divided M&M's in to color groups and talked about more and less.
And finally, to wrap up our Letter Mm week, we made mail for Nunny and Papa. I asked Sam who he wanted to write a letter to and then he told me what to write in the blanks.
Sam wanted to draw a picture of "music" on his letter.

Mmmmmmm....... We had fun!
