I mentioned making some "Mystery Gifts" in this blog. Even though, I haven't mailed it out yet, I will share one of them with you. It is for my step-brother's wife, J, who is expecting their first child very soon! It does need some explanation for those of you that don't have kids or haven't had them in a while.
This is a nursing cover. My friend, Aubrey, recently made one for herself and I just had to give it a try! There is not pattern, just two simple straps (one short with the rings, one long to go around the neck) and a large hemmed rectangle with the boning placed in between the straps. It required 1 yard of fabric, two "D" rings, and about 12-16 inches of boning. It was around $10 to make and they are around $40 to purchase. It could be even cheaper depending on the fabric you choose.
An adjustable "D" ring closure. I've seen some made with a more decorative belt buckle type d ring. I'd like to find them for the next time I make one.
The boning makes the cover stand away from your body so that you can see the baby while he/she is nursing but does not expose the Mommy.
I also added a pocket to hold nursing pads or a pacifier made out of half a wash cloth. The wash cloth can then be used to wipe up.
Yours truly modeling for you. Don't worry I didn't shove one of the boys under there! This picture is a little blurry but best shows how the cover is to be worn.
This looks great Sarah....she'll love it for sure.
ReplyDeleteGood work! When/if I have another one I may have to hire you to make one. My friend has one that was well over 40 dollars but it sure is better than the blanket over the shoulder!
