Winter Adventures in Parenthood

Check out our icicles.

Yesterday, we made the two (two and a half tops) hour journey from my parents to our house only this time it took 4 1/2 hours! It was smooth sailing until we got about 20-30 miles from our house; it took 2 1/2 hours to go those long... very long... miles. I was driving so that my husband could get some school work done on the laptop. We knew we were going to hit snow when we got closer to home but not like this! There were about 6-8 inches on the road and we were on a main road.

(Stop reading if you don't appreciate bathroom humor...)

Keep in mind that we have two small boys (3 years and 20 months). They were doing really well since I always travel with enough snacks to feed an army and our van is equipped with the best thing ever - a DVD player. We were all dancing along to Elvis, since we were watching Lilo and Stitch, until Sam (the three year old) started crying because his tummy hurt. He just recently potty trained and I thought he was going to ask to go to the bathroom (which we weren't getting to one any time soon) but instead he started "getting sick" all over himself and the car seat. My husband hopped in the back and got him cleaned up (thankfully I had a plastic grocery bag and a roll of paper towels in the van). Since we were at a standstill we actually took him out of his car seat and changed his clothes. And then he continued to get sick... And the poor little guy was forced to "get sick" in some small baggies that we had his snacks in. I've never thrown anything out the car window but yesterday, I became a litterer. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

So, in the middle of a snow storm we had air conditioning going, windows down (trying to cool Sam off and air things out) and small bags going out the window....

Fast forward to this morning... Ray (20 months) is standing in his crib yelling, "Dada?! Papa?!" so, I go in to get him and his bed is covered in "getting sick". Thankfully, my husband is a teacher and had a snow day so, he put Ray in the bath. Ray pooped in the tub. He put Ray on a towel so he could clean the tub. Ray pooped on the towel. We ran out of hot water because I was also washing Ray's bedding. I warmed up water on the stove for his bath.

I went to switch his laundry to the dryer and found a used disposable diaper in their too. Thank God it didn't explode! This makes putting cereal in the fridge look like amateur's business... And yet another reason I'm glad we use cloth diapers most of the time. Isn't parenthood fun?

P.S. I don't write all of this as a woe is me story. It's funny already. It was funny while it was happening. Not funny that the kids got sick but more like situational humor. Parenthood is funny. Poop in the tub is funny. Puke in little plastic bags is funny.

P.P.S. And I didn't even tell you about how Ray gave my niece's Bible "a baptism" this weekend.
